WHAT WE BELIEVE

Our Values

Conservation. Many species in the Masai Mara are impacted by habitat loss, illegal poaching, excessive tourism, and prolonged droughts. Educational safari experiences can help guests understand the importance of these threatened and internationally important ecosystems. From there, we use photography and media to raise awareness of conservation issues faced by wildlife.

Community. Every stay with Mara Trails Camp supports the local Maasai communities nearby. A full 50% of camp profits are directed to a variety of projects. Hundreds of local school children now receive school lunches and educational funding. Masai women in the village now have herds of sheep and goats to use or sell. We employ Masai guides as part of our highly valued team, as well.

Sustainability. Our small-scale safari camp is limited to ten classic canvas tents to limit our impact on the area. Electricity is generated for the camp using solar panels, and conserved throughout the night. Single use plastics have been eliminated from our camp, with reusable water bottles being provided to each guest.  Each year, we continually look for ways we can improve our sustainability as an eco-conscious safari operator.

Hermis Haridas. An internationally acclaimed photographer, Hermis is a co-founder of our eco-friendly safari camp. His award-winning work has been featured in publications such as National Geographic. These days, Hermis leads wildlife photography workshops in locations around the world. His photographs are used to build awareness of global conservation issues.

Nisha Purushothaman. A co-founder of Mara Trails Camp, Nisha defines herself as a conservationist photographer. Although her bird photography has received global recognition, it’s the big cats of the Mara that are her current passion. Nisha uses her photographs to give people a glimpse of a world that may vanish without our protection.

John Temut. A key figure in the success of Mara Trails Camp, John’s upbringing on Masai lands has made him a naturalist from his earliest years. He is highly regarded for his skill in guiding wildlife photographers in the region. Over the last 15 years, John has advised and managed many safari camps. His commitment to sustainable tourism helps preserve the natural environment and create job opportunities for Masai communities.

Dr. Peter Hudson. A highly respected wildlife disease ecologist, Dr. Hudson is a co-founder of Mara Trails Camp. A professor at both Penn State University and the Nelson Mandela African Institute of Science, he still finds time to practice photography on the side. Dr. Hudson strongly supports both the conservation and community values of the camp. His valuable insights guide the development of our eco-friendly safaris.
