Why A Hot Air Balloon Safari Is A Must

Few experiences in the world can compare to the breathtaking magic of a hot air balloon safari over the Masai Mara in Kenya. Drifting silently above the vast savannah as the first light of dawn paints the sky in hues of gold and pink is nothing short of unforgettable. Whether you’re a seasoned traveller or embarking on a once-in-a-lifetime journey, a hot air balloon safari offers a unique perspective of Africa’s incredible wildlife and scenery. Here’s why it’s an experience you simply can’t miss.

A NEW WAY TO SEE THINGS

Why Opt For A Hot Air Balloon Safari?

While game drives put you right in the action, a hot air balloon safari offers a completely different perspective of the Masai Mara eco-system.

From above, the vastness of the Masai Mara unfolds in a way that’s impossible to grasp from the ground. Rolling grasslands stretch to the horizon, dotted with acacia trees and winding riverbeds. Herds of elephants, zebras, and giraffes move across the plains, their paths weaving into the landscape like a living tapestry.

During the Great Migration, this view becomes even more spectacular. Imagine looking down as thousands of wildebeest and zebras traverse the river.  It’s a sight that defines Africa’s most famous wildlife event.

PLANNING AHEAD

How It Works

Like many activities while on safari, a hot air balloon safari starts before dawn.  Our drivers will take you to the launch site.  Bring a bag to hold your binoculars or camera, as well as some warm layers. You may find the cool morning air to be a little on the chilly side depending on the season!

First, the balloon crew will inflate the balloon and prepare for the trip.  Next, you and the other guests will board into the basket – typically, the basket will accommodate 12 – 16 guests.  Once the balloon is filled and you’ve had your safety briefing, the flight will begin.  You’ll slowly begin soaring over the Masai Mara.

Your trip will last approximately an hour.   As the sun rises, you’ll see the landscape become bathed in golden light. Watching the Mara awaken from above is nothing short of breathtaking.

When it’s time to land, the magic isn’t over yet.  You’ll be treated to a champagne toast followed by a bush breakfast, allowing you time to reminisce about the incredible journey you just had.

BOOKING A BALLOON SAFARI

How Much Does A Balloon Safari Cost?

A hot air balloon safari in Kenya is a premium experience and it comes with a price tag.  But ask anyone who’s done it, and they’ll tell you—it’s worth every penny. This is one of those once-in-a-lifetime moments that stays with you long after you’ve left Africa.

The cost of your trip includes the services of a licensed balloon pilot and multiple crew members.  This service is safe and is one that has been enjoyed by many over the years, with many 5 star reviews.

Hot Air Balloon Safari FAQs

Are Hot Air Balloon Safaris Really Safe?

Yes!  Each trip is piloted by a licensed balloon pilot, plus additional crew members.  You will receive a safety briefing that includes instructions such as how to board the basket and what to do during takeoff and landing.  Hot air balloon flights only operate under safe weather conditions, so if your flight is cancelled it is done so for good reason.  In this case, you may be offered an alternate date or a refund.

Your Masai Mara hot air balloon safari will include approximately one hour of flight time.  During this time, you’ll float over the plains as your pilot points out wildlife and other sights along the way.  Afterwards, you’ll be served a bush breakfast on the savanna to allow you to savour your morning a little longer.  The entire experience (from pickup at Mara Trails Camp to drop-off) can take up to 4 – 5 hours.

Yes!  By floating above the Mara, you’ll be able to spot herds of animals easily.  Depending on the day and on your pilot, you may also be able to spot individual big cats like lions or cheetahs.  Bring binoculars and your camera as you may want to capture video of this spectacular experience.

We recommend that you wear layers on your flight.  The mornings before dawn can be cold and there may be a breeze as well.  As the sun rises, you may feel warmer and wish to remove some layers.  Bring a small bag that holds your binoculars or camera – large bags may not be permitted due to lack of space.  It would be wise to consider having a strap for your camera, binoculars, or smartphone to prevent you from dropping your device during your hot air balloon safari.
